Video Production for Online Learning

A core part of my learning technology work has been producing video and media content for use in online postgraduate modules at UCL STEaPP. This is not screen-recorded lecture content - it is purposefully produced video designed to function as a learning resource in its own right: providing context, framing a topic, or introducing a perspective before students engage with readings, discussions and activities.

STEP0024: Expert Interview Series

For the STEP0024 Science Communication module, I planned, filmed and produced a series of expert interviews as primary learning resources. These were embedded in the Moodle course alongside structured note-taking prompts and discussion activities - giving students access to specialist perspectives that would not typically be available in a self-directed online module.

The interview series included sessions filmed at high-profile venues, including the House of Lords and the Royal Society - providing students with access to practitioners and policymakers working directly in the science, policy and communication environments the module addresses.

Weekly Context Videos

I also filmed a series of weekly introductory videos for STEP0024, providing students with a guided entry point into each topic before engaging with the academic material. These videos were designed to reduce the cognitive load of entering a new topic cold - helping students orient themselves, understand why a topic matters, and know what to look for as they work through the week's activities.

What made these resources work
  • Short, focused format - each video serves a specific instructional purpose rather than trying to cover everything
  • Integrated with the activity sequence - videos were paired with note-taking prompts and led into structured discussion tasks
  • Hosted on Panopto with accessibility features including captions and viewer controls
  • Expert interview content was obtained specifically for the module - not repurposed from elsewhere

Conference Presentations and Sector Engagement

Alongside the production work, I have presented at a range of sector events - from institutional forums to national conferences. These include presenting at BETT 2026, delivering and co-presenting at the CODE/RIDE Annual Conference (University of London, March 2026), and presenting at the Advance HE Annual Conference in 2022.

BETT 2026

Presenting at BETT, the UK's largest education technology event, as a Microsoft AI Practitioner badge holder (issued January 2026). The session covered practical and responsible AI use in professional and educational contexts.

CODE/RIDE Annual Conference, University of London - March 2026

Co-presented a conference paper and poster with Dr Maria Cross (UCL STEaPP) on designing inclusive, scalable online postgraduate provision. The paper explored engagement without synchronous contact, integrity through design, and asynchronous participation across distributed cohorts. Published in the conference proceedings.

Advance HE Annual Conference - June 2022

Co-presented a poster with Dr Bonacaro and Prof. Green on immersive learning experiences - including 360 scenario-based learning and A-Frame environments in professional training and higher education.

Immersive and 360 Learning Experiences

My work with immersive learning spans from early 360 video experiments to A-Frame web-based VR environments and H5P interactive video scenarios used in professional training. This work developed in parallel with my LMS and instructional design practice, and reflects a consistent interest in using technology to create more engaging, context-rich learning experiences.

360 Video

Early work in 360 video production - including a school VR tour created in collaboration with a specialist from BT - established a practical understanding of the requirements of immersive content: careful location planning, scripting for 360 space rather than flat-screen delivery, and designing interactions that make use of the environment rather than simply recording it.

A-Frame Web VR

Built scenario-based immersive environments using A-Frame (Mozilla's open-source WebVR framework). These web-accessible environments allow learners to engage with immersive content without specialist hardware - running in standard browsers on desktop or mobile. Used in professional safety and de-escalation training at IKON Training to let learners practise responses to realistic workplace scenarios.

H5P Interactive Video

Developed H5P interactive video resources using the "Whole-Part-Whole" approach to skill acquisition - presenting a complete skill, breaking it into components for analysis, then returning to the whole. Designed to allow learners to study physical techniques independently between in-person sessions, supporting retention without removing the in-person practice component.

Context and Related Work

The media production work described here sits within the broader context of my online learning design practice at UCL STEaPP. Video is not treated as a separate component bolted onto a Moodle course - it is integrated into the instructional sequence, paired with note-taking and discussion activities, and designed to serve a specific pedagogical purpose at each point in the learning arc.

The immersive learning work is separately evidenced in my CMALT Specialist Areas submission. The UCL module development work, including the full context for STEP0024, is described on the UCL STEaPP Module Development page. The conference presentation record, including the CODE/RIDE paper and the AI workshop delivery series, is on the Speaking & Workshops page.
